Kibingo Washing Station - 1700 Smallholders - Kayanza, Burundi

Sale price$27.00

For the first time ever, we are sourcing a coffee from the country of Burundi. Burundi is a landlocked country situated just south of Rwanda and west of Tanzania in eastern Africa. Burundi is one of the highest altitude countries and sits on average at 1500 meters (4900 feet) above sea level. This is optimum growing conditions for the variety of Red Bourbon which produces strong floral notes and increased body when grown at high altitudes.

The majority of coffee exported from the country are through washing stations who buy lots from many smallholders, rather than individual farms. This is because land in Burundi is distributed as small plots of land which doesn’t allow farmers to scale their operations. During the occupation by Belgium in the 1930s the Belgians introduced the Arabica variety of Red Bourbon to the region, which allowed the coffee to grow very well in small scale farms without the need for larger plantations.
