Muhororo Washing Station - 238 Smallholders

Sale price$29.00

Muhororo is both a family-owned washing station and the name of the family that purchases coffee cherries from local farmers in Rwanda. The station works with smallholder farmers. These farmers, the backbone of Rwanda’s coffee industry, have faced historical and economic challenges, yet continue to produce exceptional coffee. The lingering effects of the 1994 genocide are still felt today, influencing labor structures in rural areas. Women now make up the majority of the coffee industry, with three women working for every man. Recognizing this, Muhororo provides crucial support, offering jobs, cash advances on coffee sales, covering education and healthcare expenses, and even contributing to farmers’ weddings.

A commitment to sustainability and community well being is key in Muhororo’s mission. Each year, they distribute 4,000 new coffee trees to local growers, ensuring future harvests and economic stability. Looking ahead, they plan to build a daycare facility that will provide basic healthcare and early education services to families. Currently, a childcare program is already in place to assist working parents. Supporting Muhororo also means supporting its farmers. Through a partnership with our importer, Hacea, 10% of an additional fee on purchased coffee is donated annually to their community programs.
